Best Dog-Friendly Beaches in the UK for Van Lifers
Published by Trek Mutz | Van Life · Pets · Adventure
There is nothing quite like parking up the van, sliding the side door open, and hearing the sound of the sea. For your dog, the beach is the ultimate playground—an endless expanse of sand to dig, seaweed to sniff, and waves to chase.
But as any van lifer with a dog knows, hitting the coast isn't always simple. Come May, half the UK’s beaches slap down seasonal dog bans. On top of that, you have to navigate the dreaded 2-metre height barriers that seem designed specifically to ruin a campervan trip.
We’ve scoured the coastline to find the absolute best dog-friendly beaches in the UK. These are spots that welcome dogs year-round and—crucially—have van-friendly parking nearby.
1. Rhossili Bay, Gower Peninsula, Wales
Consistently voted one of the best beaches in Europe, Rhossili Bay is a massive three-mile stretch of golden sand. It is entirely dog-friendly 365 days a year. At low tide, the beach is so vast that even on a sunny bank holiday, you can find a quiet spot for your dog to run wild.
Van life tip: The National Trust car park at the top of the cliff is large and doesn't have height barriers. The walk down is steep, but the views of Worm's Head are worth the climb back up.
2. Holkham Beach, Norfolk, England
Holkham is legendary among dog owners. It’s a spectacular, sweeping expanse of sand backed by a dense pine forest (perfect for a shaded walk if the sun gets too hot). The beach is so big it feels like you've driven to another planet.
Van life tip: Parking is available along Lady Anne's Drive. It’s van-friendly, but there are no overnight stays allowed. Keep an eye out for the roped-off nesting bird areas during spring and summer—dogs need to be on leads in those specific zones.
3. Bamburgh Beach, Northumberland, England
If you want drama with your morning dog walk, Bamburgh delivers. The beach sits right in the shadow of the imposing Bamburgh Castle. The sand is pristine, the dunes are massive, and dogs are welcome all year round.
Van life tip: There are several car parks right opposite the castle with no height barriers. Northumberland is also incredibly accommodating to van lifers, with plenty of nearby dog-friendly pubs to warm up in after a breezy North Sea walk.
4. Watergate Bay, Cornwall, England
Cornwall is notoriously difficult for dog owners in the summer, with strict bans across many of its famous coves. Watergate Bay is the glorious exception. Just a short drive up the coast from Newquay, it offers two miles of open sand and is dog-friendly all year.
Van life tip: There are two main car parks. The lower one can get tight for longer wheelbase vans, so aim for the top car park if you're driving a larger rig.
5. Balnakeil Beach, Scottish Highlands
If you're exploring the far north, Balnakeil near Durness is unmissable. It features bone-white sand, turquoise water, and zero dog restrictions. It genuinely looks like the Caribbean (until you dip your toe in).
Van life tip: The parking at the beach is straightforward, and the nearby Durness area has great campsites and some tolerated wild spots if you follow the Scottish Outdoor Access Code.
The Van Lifer's Beach Code
Beat the sand: The reality of van life is that beach days equal sand in the bed. Keep a dedicated dog towel and a stiff brush in the back of the van to dust off paws before they jump back inside.
Check the tides: Some of these beaches disappear completely at high tide. Always check a tide app before you pay for a full day of parking.
Leave no trace: It goes without saying, but always bag your dog’s waste and take it with you. The only thing we should leave behind are paw prints.
